Sign Sales, Manufacturing & Installation

Sign sales manufacturing & installation in pa, md, & de

Signs are responsible for conveying information that affects our daily lives. Whether it’s a traffic sign outlining the rules of the road or a business’ sign telling potential customers what they can expect inside, clarity, visibility and consistency are essential qualities. It’s for this reason that companies have detailed branding guidelines and state and federal regulations contain specific requirements for street signage.

A sign manufacturer’s role is to act as a bridge between these requirements and the finished product. At D.E. Gemmill Inc., it’s a role we take very seriously. We are a leading sign manufacturer for businesses, public works departments, construction crews and other clients who require a high-quality product at a reasonable price.

As a top sign manufacturer based in York, PA, we offer sales and service throughout Pennsylvania, Maryland and Delaware. Browse our online store to view available products or contact a representative to inquire about custom projects.

ADA Signs

Americans with Disabilities Act or ADA was enacted over 25 years ago to safeguard the rights of disabled Americans. ADA regulations dictate that public organizations and businesses must accommodate disabled individuals, including signage that is conveniently located and easy to read both visually and through tactile touch. The ADA broadly protects the rights of individuals with disabilities in employment, access to State and local government services, places of public accommodation, transportation, and other important areas of American life. The ADA also requires newly designed and altered constructed State and local government facilities, public accommodations, and commercial facilities to be readily accessible to and usable by individuals with disabilities.

There are a few general rules for ADA signs which include:

The background and visual characters must contrast from light to dark or dark to light and have a non- glare finish. Glare and reflection can be a major problem for anyone with vision impairments as well as the elderly.

Proper ADA signage is required in order to obtain a certificate of occupancy for your business or building. All buildings need to be compliant no matter what kind of establishment you may have, so it’s important to work with D.E. Gemmill so we can help you make sure your ADA compliant. We are experienced with creating and installing ADA compliant signage, and we look forward to assisting you with any of your needs.

Regulatory Signs

Regulatory traffic signs are intended to inform road users of selected laws or regulations required for driving on the road. Signs indicating these requirements should be designed and installed in areas along the roadway that provide adequate visibility, reflectivity, and be legible according to the federal guidelines. These types of signs can be found on the streets, parking lots, public parks or in architectural facilities prohibiting specific types of activities, either at all times or at specified times. The disregard of regulatory signs may constitute a violation. Regulatory signs must be retroreflective to show the same shape and color, day or night, unless otherwise specified.

Some examples of Regulatory signs include:

Traffic signals, rights of way and pedestrian crosswalks

Speed limits and enforcement areas

Lane control, movement prohibition, passing and slow traffic lanes

Selective exclusion, one way and divided highways

Road features such as roundabout, closed roads, or headlight use

Weight limits and defined truck routes

Selective exclusion, one way and divided highways

Guide signs

Guide signs provide drivers with useful mileage and directional information. For obvious reasons, they must be custom-printed. We can produce clear and accurate signs that are in compliance with highway and roadway signage requirements in your state. They also indicate locations, points of interest, routes and other geographical, recreational or cultural information.

Some of the common Guide signs include:

Street Name Signs

State Route Signs

Route Markers: Interstate route, county route, forest route, interstate systems and national byways

Destination Signs: Distance w/ arrows and destinations with arrows

Water Recreational Signs: Boat ramp, swimming area, and sailing signs

Land Recreational Signs: Hiking Trail, ATV, rock climbing and horse trail signs

Auxiliary Guide Signs: Right lane, left lane and center lane signs

Information Signs: Bus stop, falling rocks, pets on a leash and recycling signs

Accommodation Signs: Baby changing area, restroom, and parking or no parking signs

Temporary Traffic Control Signs

The primary function of temporary traffic control signs is to provide safe and efficient movement of vehicles, bicyclist and pedestrians through or around work zones, while ensuring the safety of workers, equipment as well as emergency responders at traffic accidents. D.E. Gemmill’s mid-Atlantic region traffic services can help you determine the appropriate temporary traffic control rentals or signs needed to help your situation at hand. There are many factors to consider to ensure success of these activities which include the placement and condition of the traffic control signage. The signs should not be worn, damaged or improperly installed because it will diminish the effectiveness of the work zone. Clean, legible, and properly installed temporary traffic control signs will command the respect of road users and keep the roadway or work zone a safer place. These quality standards are intended as a resource to determine if the temporary traffic control signs are meeting current traffic needs in terms of visibility, legibility, and other safety and mobility requirements.

At D.E. Gemmill our facility is both a Pennsylvania and Maryland approved sign manufacturing facility, our signs adhere to the highest standards to ensure material compliance to meet new and current retroreflective standards. We have various stock and custom legends available with orange or florescent orange background with black legends or symbols. Temporary traffic control signs are usually diamond or square-shaped and are available for sale or for rent in aluminum, Roll-up, coroplast, or dibond material.

Use our collapsible road signs to display detour information and move traffic safely through a job or accident site. We have a long history of temporary traffic control equipment sales and can produce custom signs in a variety of shapes and sizes. If you’re in need of traffic control services in the mid-Atlantic region, call D.E. Gemmill.

Traffic Sign Posts & Stands

Oversized custom traffic signs may require custom posts and stands to mount securely. We can match any of our products with a sign post or other mounting equipment based on your requirements.

A variety of posts are available for mounting traffic signs. Some of the posts include Square Steel, Round Steel, U-Channel Steel and Wooden Posts. Most Department of Transportation (DOT) agencies require some type of breakaway system. Steel posts involve a base post driven or mounted into the ground and then the top post is attached via a breakaway hardware system to the post base. Some states require simple ground mounting (directly buried into the ground) while other states require pre-fabricated sleeves concreted into the ground in which the post is mounted. All posts require two holes to be drilled into the post near the base at strategically located positions to make it a breakaway system, strategically located, to create a breaking point should it be struck by a vehicle.

What type of post & Stand should you use?

U-channel Posts

One of the most cost-effective posts, longevity, widely used.

U-channel posts are typically available with green (average life expectancy of 68 years) or galvanized coatings (exceed 10 years in life expectancy), however, the galvanized are more expensive. There are several different weights (pounds per foot) of sign posts. Our experience with the U-channel posts are that during windy conditions they tend to rock back and forth much more than other types of posts. This wind and rocking tend to cut a path or a groove into the ground due to the shape of the post. This can cause the base to come loose and an entire post and signed to lean and in some circumstances even break.

Square Metal Posts

Increasing in popularity, sturdier than U-channel, better aesthetics and more options.

Square posts come with galvanized coating and are typically pre-punched on all 4 sides with holes spaced every inch. They are also available without the pre-punches being knocked out. The 2 inch square post is the most popular; however they are also available in 1 3/4 inch and 2 ½ inch sizes. Our experience, the square post is much sturdier than the U channel; provides better aesthetics; provides more options than the U-channel; and allows you to mount signs on all four sides of the post unlike the U channel. And, the square post does not rock and cut into the ground like the U-channel post.

Wooden Posts

Accepted and used in various states for mounting traffic signs.

Round Posts

Round posts are another option for mounting signs. However, most state Department of Transportation (DOTs) do not use the round posts. Some local government agencies use the round posts for their aesthetic value. Many new developments use them for their street name signs. The standard size is 2 3/8” O.D. and they are galvanized.

There are several ways of mounting the posts: direct barrel into the ground; the Oz base which is a 3 foot spear spackled base driven into the ground and the post inserted into the base and a collar is tightened into the base and around it. And the final way is a surface-mounted base that is bolted to a surface such as concrete, the post is inserted into the base and bolts are tightened to hold the post. The round post is a nice look however, it is more expensive as the signs must be attached with round post brackets coifing more than the standard bolt & nut.

We have the solutions to all your sign manufacturing needs, we can tackle your problematic sign needs as easily as your standard ones. We inventory a wide variety of ordinary road signs and can provide all the appropriate posts, MUTCD approved sign stands, delineators, or mounting hardware needed to complete your projects.

Wayfinding Signs

Helping people find their way is a foundational aspect in the signage industry. Wayfinding signage shows information at strategic points to guide people in the right direction. They usually assist people in unfamiliar surroundings and also helps confirm your progress along the way.  Wayfinding signage is commonly found at stadiums, arenas, amusement parks, educational facilities such as colleges and universities, state and national parks, as well as healthcare centers. It is extremely important to keep your signage as visual as possible, minimal, and easy to understand, this ensures that everyone is able to understand it with little confusion.

There are 4 types of wayfinding signage informational, directional, identification, and warning signs.

Informational signs:

are usually the first sign that you may see in a new environment, they will tell you where you are and what you will find there.

Directional signs:

often take the form of maps within the facility, they can be as vague or specific as you see fit. Depending on where the map is located at your building, the point of view and the amount of property illustrated may vary.

Identification signs:

point out a service or a feature and draw attention to something that may be of use to the customer or visitor. A public staircase, public restroom sign or information kiosk are all examples of identification signs.

Warning signs:

indicate safety procedures or hazards within the area such as fire escape routes, no smoking areas, or wet floor signs. These types of signs are extremely beneficial and are required.
